Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) has released the detailed syllabus and exam pattern for post of Assistant Foreman Trainee recruitment. Candidates preparing for the Computer Based Test (CBT) must strictly follow the official guidelines provided in the notification. The exam covers two sections in which first one is Technical Knowledge and second one is General Aptitude. NCL Assistant Foreman Exam Pattern 2026
Selection process involves a Computer Based Test (CBT) for 100 Marks and the duration of exam is 90 minutes, means 1 hour and 30 minute.

Section B: General Syllabus
General Syllabus will be same for all posts, no matter which position you are gonna apply.
- General Knowledge: About India and its international relations, General Science, etc.
- General Awareness: Sports, Defense, Books, Prizes, Indian Democracy, etc.
- Reasoning, Verbal & Mental Ability: Synonym & Antonym (Hindi/English), Grammar, Relationships, Coding-Decoding.
- Quantitative Aptitude: Work relationship, Profit & Loss, Speed, Time & Distance.
Section A: Technical Syllabus
Technical syllabus will be different for all posts, it will be based on qualification and position you are applying for.
1. Assistant Foreman in E&T Syllabus
- Networks Theory: Nodal/Mesh analysis, Theorems (Superposition, Thevenin, Norton), RLC circuits.
- Digital Electronics: Number systems, Boolean algebra, Logic Gates, Flip-flops, ADC/DAC.
- Microprocessor: 8085 Architecture and Programming.
- Electronic Devices: Diodes, BJTs, MOSFETs, Thyristors, Rectifiers.
- Communication: AM/FM Modulation, PCM, DPCM, Antennas, Waveguides.
- Computer Networking: TCP/IP, OSI Model, Network topologies, LAN/WAN.
2. Assistant Foreman in Mechanical Syllabus
- Theory of Machines: Simple machines, Flywheels, Gears, Governors, Cams.
- Strength of Materials: Stress/Strain, Bending moments, Torsion, Euler’s theory.
- Thermal Engineering: Laws of Thermodynamics, Steam tables, Otto/Diesel Cycles, IC Engines.
- Fluid Mechanics: Bernoulli’s equation, Viscosity, Hydraulic Turbines, Pumps.
- Manufacturing: Casting, Forging, Welding, Lathe/Milling operations.
3. Assistant Foreman in Electrical Syllabus
- Electrical Theory: Ohm’s Law, Kirchhoff’s Laws, AC/DC Circuits, Magnetism.
- Machines: DC Generators/Motors, AC Generators, Induction Motors, Transformers.
- Power Systems: Generation, Transmission (Overhead lines), Distribution, Cables, Switchgear.
- Measurement: Measuring instruments such as Voltmeter, Ammeter, Energy meter, Transducers.
- Utilization: Illumination, Electric Heating & Welding, Domestic Wiring.
Preparation Tips
- Focus 70% of your time on Section A which is technical as it carries the maximum weightage.
- Do not ignore Section B, because 30 marks can be much more important in deciding merit.
- Practice previous year question papers of Coal India/NCL.
- Since there is no negative marking, try to attempt all questions in the exam.
